100 Christian pilgrims skate out of Warsaw

One hundred people, armed with knee guards, helmets, and rosary beads, on Tuesday left Warsaw on roller skates and are headed for the Holy City of Częstochowa in Poland's south.

The Roman Catholic pilgrims are expected to complete their 270-kilometre skate in five days.
In Częstochowa, they will visit the famous Black Madonna shrine.
The tradition of annual pilgrimages to the shrine dates back to the 15th century.
Last year, it was visited by 4.5 million pilgrims and tourists from 82 countries.
The Black Madonna is considered Poland’s most important religious icon. A small painting of the Virgin Mary on a wooden panel, it has hung in the Pauline monastery in Częstochowa since 1384. (vb)
