US towns in 'pierogi war'

Two American towns, 1,000 kilometres apart, have engaged in a fierce "pierogi war", the winner of which will be allowed to host a festival dedicated to the Polish dumpling.

Whiting, near Chicago, Indiana, has held an annual "Pierogi Fest" for 23 years. The event draws 300,000 visitors and features concerts, dances, pageants for Miss Pączki (a filled doughnut) and Mr Pierogi, a pierogi eating competition and a parade.
Meanwhile, a rival "Pierogi Festival" organised by volunteers in Edwardsville, Pennsylvania, draws some 5,000 people each year.
The Whiting Pierogi Fest, a registered trademark name since 2007, claims the Pennsylvanian event is infringing on its name rights and has threatened to take legal action.
But Edwardsville has threatened to fight back, saying the trademark has caused it financial harm. (vb)
