According to the country’s Central Statistical Office (GUS), at the end of 2016, Poland had 223,000 people aged 90 and over, and 4,900 centenarians.
Meanwhile, the statistical office predicts that in 2035 the number of people aged 90 and over will reach 387,800, and that the number of centenarians will quadruple to 20,700.
Demographer Prof. Piotr Szukalski from the University of Łódź in central Poland said: “We are seeing changes that are gigantic."
He added that the number of 90-year-olds in Poland has increased tenfold over the past 100 years.
