Mozart festival opens in Warsaw

The annual Mozart Festival opens in Warsaw, Monday, with a concert performance of “Don Giovanni” in the National Philharmonic Hall, with the internationally-acclaimed Polish baritone Artur Ruciński in the title role.

Sutkowski founded the Warsaw Chamber Opera, which runs the event. He also initiated the Mozart Festival in 1991. For many years the latter was the world’s only event presenting Mozart’s entire operatic output.
This year’s festival coincides with a conflict between the Warsaw Chamber Opera’s acting director and its artistic team surrounding a planned restructuring of the company under which many musicians and singers are to be made redundant.
Hence the programme of the Mozart Festival is far more modest than in previous years. It includes the performances of “Cosi fan tutte” and “The Magic Flute”, concerts featuring the composer’s “Requiem” and the “C minor Mass”, special attractions for children, and weekly free-of-charge open-air orchestral concerts.
The festival closes on 15 July with a gala of popular arias sung by leading Polish soloists. (mk/rg)
