Historic glass paintings renovated by Polish museum

Conservation work on more than 450 folk paintings on glass dating back to the 18th century has been completed at the Tatra Museum in Zakopane, in southern Poland.

“It was a long-term project started in 2003 … We determined that all the works need to be renovated,” the museum’s head of conservation, Agata Nowakowska-Wolak, said.

Most of the 462 paintings come from the late 18th and early 19th centuries from art centres associated with glassworks in the southern Silesia region.

“There was various waste, bits of glass near the glassworks that folk artists used as bases,” Nowakowska-Wolak said adding that the pieces mainly depict biblical scenes.

The conservation work cost some PLN 500,000 (EUR 113,000) and was partly financed by the Culture and National Heritage Ministry. (vb/pk)
