French daily Le Parisien cites producer Robert Benmussa as saying that filming will begin in May 2017 at the earliest.

The film, which has the working title of 'D.', is based on Robert Harris's novel 'An Officer and a Spy'. It explores the Dreyfus Affair, which hinges on a notorious miscarriage of justice at the tail-end of the 19th century.

French-Jewish officer Captain Alfred Dreyfus was wrongly convicted in 1894 of spying for Germany, prompting a celebrated campaign to overturn the decision.

Le Parisien writes that the (unnamed) American star that Polański wants to cast in the lead is unavailable this year, due to previous commitments, meaning that filming will not start this summer.

Polański had originally planned to film the movie in Poland, although earlier this year it was announced that the shoot would be switched to Paris, apparently owing to newly approved tax breaks for film-makers in France.

In October 2015, a Kraków court ruled that Polański – who had been dividing his time between Poland and France - should not be deported to the US in connection with a 1977 case of unlawful sex with a minor. (nh)
