In addition to a seven-CD box set which contains all previous recordings of Górecki’s music produced by Nonesuch, Friday sees the launch of the first recording of Górecki's Symphony No.4, as well as of the first vinyl LP of his Symphony No. 3 (Symphony of Sorrowful Songs).
It was that last work, released by Nonesuch in 1992, featuring the London Sinfonietta and the soprano Dawn Upshaw, which skyrocketed Górecki to international fame, breaking popularity records and becoming the most successful recording ever of a work by a contemporary composer.
Symphony No. 4 is one of Górecki’s last compositions. Left incomplete at the time of his death, it was finished by the composer’s son, Mikołaj, on the basis of his father’s instructions.
The Nonesuch release is a live recording of the work’s world premiere, which was performed by the London Philharmonic under Andrey Boreyko in London in April 2014. (mk/pk)
