Men with a habit of posting selfies on Facebook and other social networking sites tend to be narcissistic, Polish researchers have concluded.

Women upload more pictures of themselves onto services such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, according to researchers from the Institute of Psychology of the University of Wrocław in western Poland.

But, unlike men, there’s no evidence such behaviour in women is linked to narcissism, the researchers said.

"Women generally tend to post selfies on social networking sites more often. But in men such behavior is linked to narcissism," University of Wrocław expert Anna Oleszkiewicz told Poland’s PAP news agency.

Oleszkiewicz explained that narcissism is a type of personality disorder. "Narcissistic people want recognition from the people around them. But it’s often difficult for them to understand other people's feelings," she added.

The Wrocław psychologists studied 1,296 men and women. Six people told researchers they never posted their pictures on social networking sites, but others admitted they upload 650 selfies a month.
