The American production company behind the lucrative 'Mummy' franchise has joined forces with Poland's Platige Image to create a full-length feature film about Geralt the Witcher, hero of Andrzej Sapkowski's fantasy tales.

According to Platige Image, the screenplay will draw on themes from short story collection ‘The Witcher’ and ‘Lesser Evil’, a tale from ‘The Last Wish’.

The script is being written by Thania St. John, best known for television hits such as 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer'.

Polish director Tomasz Bagiński, who was nominated for an Oscar in 2002 for his short animated film 'The Cathedral', is aiming for a 2017 world premiere.

It is understood that the film will combine animation with live action.

Sapkowski's tales follow the adventures of monster-slayer Geralt and his trusty companion and bard Jaskier.

The books have enjoyed considerable international success, spawning a best-selling series of computer games, the latter produced by Polish company CD Projekt Red.

Bagiński created the animated intros for the three instalments in the computer game series.

A live action Polish movie based on Sapkowski's tales was released in 2001, under the English title of 'The Hexer', but it did not meet with favourable reviews, and Sapkowski himself was unimpressed. (nh/rk)
