Poland, the United States and South Korea have three pianists each in the third stage; Canada and Russia are represented by two entrants and the Czech Republic, Japan, Croatia, Latvia, China, Italy and Ukraine by one participant.
In the third stage, which opens on Wednesday, the pianists are performing a recital lasting about 50 minutes, consisting of a Sonata (in B flat minor or in B minor) or Preludes No. 28 and a cycle of mazurkas. The names of ten finalists will be announced on 16 October.
Poland’s hopefuls in the competition are twenty three year-old Łukasz Krupiński (a student of the University of Music in Warsaw) and two students of the Music Academy in Bydgoszcz – Szymon Nehring (20 years old) and Krzysztof Książek (23 years old).
Founded in 1927, the Chopin Competition is one of the oldest and most prestigious events of its kind. (mk/rg/rk)
