Opole Music Festival starts

The annual three-day National Festival of Polish Song in Opole kicks off in the south-west Polish city on 12 June.

The largest such event in Poland, Opole starts at 8.30pm with a concert by the legendary band Skaldowie, whose hits will be covered by other bands, including Mery Spolsky, Żaneta Łabudzka, Jeremi Sikorski, Justyna Panfilewicz & Mariusz Wawrzyńczyk, Space and Aleksandra Nizio.

Others appearing over the three days include Edyta Górniak, Monika Kuszyńska, Golec uOrkiestra and Zakopower.

Skaldowie are a band from Kraków who were popular from the 1960s to the 1980s. Many of their songs were a fusion of rock, folk, and classical music.

The Opole festival was created in 1963 as a place to celebrate the past year's achievements by Polish song writers and performers. Its traditional patrons include Polskie Radio and Telewizja Polska, as well as the Society of Friends of Opole. (jh)
