Historic art collection returns to Polish castle

A collection of over 100 paintings has been deposited at a castle museum in Dzików, south eastern Poland, thanks to the efforts of the Tarnowski family that once lived in the building.

The castle, which is a branch of the Tarnobrzeg Historical Museum, was recently restored following a turbulent 20th century history.
Tadeusz Zych, director of the museum, has described the collection “as the largest virtually intact collection of paintings to have endured [in Poland] that was once in private aristocratic hands.”
Works hanging once more on the castle's walls include paintings by Salvatora Rosa, Simone de Pesaro, Alonso Cano, Thomasa Wyck and Poland's celebrated Kossak artistic dynasty.

The last owner of Dzików, Artur Tarnowski, was compelled to live abroad after a Moscow-backed communist regime was installed in Poland following World War II.
Pieces from the collection were dispersed among various Polish museums, including the National Museum in Kraków.
Under the aegis of Jan Tarnowski, eldest son of the last owner, most of the surviving works have now been deposited in Dzików until 2040. (nh)
