The town’s mayor, Leoluca Orlando, has said that the distinction is in recognition of Warlikowski’s mastery in presenting on stage the secrets of the human soul and of the complex condition of the contemporary man.

The ceremony is to take place on Tuesday evening at Palermo’s Teatro Massimo, the third largest opera house in Europe.

At the city’s Giuseppe Galibardi Theatre, Warlikowski is currently holding theatre workshops, whose programme includes video shows of some of his major productions, such as Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Alban Berg’s Lulu.

In the 1990s, Warlikowski met and learned from such household names as Peter Brook, Ingmar Bergman and Giorgio Strehler. He has subsequently developed a fine international career, both in drama and opera, in such countries as Germany, Holland, Israel and France.

Warlikowski has produced Karol Szymanowski’s King Roger at the Paris Opera. Now the 52-year-old serves as Artistic Director of the Nowy Theatre in Warsaw. (mk/jb)
