The Hollywood blockbuster “Fifty Shades of Grey”, derided by critics for its tepid portrayal of a BDSM love affair between a dominant billionaire and a virgin girl, set new records at the Polish box-office.

The film sold 834,479 tickets in its first weekend at Polish cinemas, beating a record set eight years back by the animated “Shrek III”.

The Universal Pictures production, based on an erotic novel by the British writer E.L. James, is often condemned as “mommy porn” and its portrayal of feminine sexuality has generated a heated debate in feminist circles in the UK and US – though it seems to have mostly bypassed Poland.

The film generated sales of over PLN 17 million (EUR 4 million) on its first night alone, when 425,000 tickets were sold. (an)
