“Norway is known throughout the world for its superb music scene, with its mythical atmosphere, provocative character and strong expression,” a statement released by the embassy enthuses.
“A special place has been taken by Norwegian black metal, which has become one of our cultural export products.”
As of Tuesday evening, fans will be able to savour images by photographer Per Ole Hagen at Warsaw's Klub Progresja.
Hagen has chronicled gigs by such acclaimed names as Audrey Horne, Aura Noir, Dimmu Borgir, Djerv, Enslaved, God Seed, Immortal, Mayhem, Dr.Midnight And The Mercy Cult and many others.
“The embassy's promotion of black metal music and its image may seem a little surprising,” the embassy noted, adding that “many people feel provoked by this music.”
However, “with this show, the embassy wants to communicate to the Polish public that it treats black metal the same as it would any other cultural phenomenon.”
The embassy added that “contrary to appearances, metal musicians are often just ordinary citizens – devoted parents, lovers of mountain scenery, scientists and teachers.”
The exhibition 'Norwegian Metal' runs until 24 July. (nh)
