Yoko Ono, widow of late Beatles’ legend John Lennon, took to the stage with Sonic Youth guitarist Thurston Moore, accompanied by Poznań-based drummer Adam Gołębiewski.

The event coincided with Yoko Ono turning 80 year-old this year, says festival director Jan Kaczmarek.

“We are proud and happy that Yoko agreed to perform at the time of her 80th birth anniversary, an event celebrated across the world,” Kaczmarek said before the concert.

“She will also receive our key prize, the Transatlantyk Glocal Hero Award. Her work devoted to promoting world peace have won global acclaim, including the famous “bed-in” with John Lennon, which was a protest against the Vietnam war.”

“We need more uncompromising figures in Poland who believe in noble ideas such as world peace and are willing to devote their entire lives to the cause,” Jan Kaczmarek said.

Last year’s Transatlantyk Glocal Hero Award was received by classical composer Krzysztof Penderecki and his wife Elżbieta. (aba/pg)
