Warsaw declaration against totalitarianism signed

Representatives of several EU countries signed the so-called Warsaw Declaration on Cooperation, Tuesday, to “prevent the repetition of totalitarian regimes on the continent.”

The signatories of the Warsaw Declaration were in Poland’s capital for a special conference marking the European Day of Remembrance of Victims of Totalitarian Regimes, designated by the European Parliament in 2009.
The document states that “crimes of totalitarian regimes in Europe should be acknowledged and condemned, regardless of their type and ideology”.
There is also a declaration of keeping up the memory of victims of all totalitarian regimes and appeal for holding people responsible for comiting such crimes.
“The Warsaw Declaration is a unanimous agreement of all EU member states that we have to do everything we can to prevent any totalitarian regime from reviving in all the countries making up one big European family,” Polish Justice Minister Krzysztof Kwiatkowski said after signing the document.
Organized by Poland’s Ministry of Justice with the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN) the conference brought together justice ministers from European countries and heads of European Institutions dealing with issues of totalitarianism. (pg/di)
