A Moscow court has sentenced a Polish man to 14 years in a penal colony on charges of espionage, according to news reports.

The Pole, named as Marian Radzajewski, was convicted after security officials said they caught him attempting to smuggle parts of a Russian S-300 missile system to Poland, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported, citing Russia's state news service Tass.

Polish diplomats in Moscow have offered no comment, the IAR news agency reported.

It said the case was from the beginning handled by investigators from Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB).

All the case files were classified and the trial took place behind closed doors, IAR reported.

It cited a statement by the FSB according to which it said Radzajewski was caught red-handed as he attempted to organise the transfer of parts of the S-300 missile system to Poland.

Under Russian law, such components serve a military purpose and their design is a state secret, the IAR news agency reported.

It cited Russia's FSB as saying that the Pole was working for an organisation that is a "supplier for the national armed forces."

The verdict is subject to appeal, IAR reported, citing Russia’s Tass news agency.
