A PAH team stationed in Colombia, close to the Venezuelan border, has said that over 20,000 Venezuelans are crossing the border every day in search of basic foodstuffs and work.
Among them are women with small children. Paula Gierak of PAH told public broadcaster Polish Radio that there are acute shortages of food, water, medicines and electricity.
Coupled with widespread disease and day-time temperatures up to 35 degrees Celsius, the situation is deteriorating from day to day, she said.
Gierak added: “We are distributing potable water, milk for babies, food and hygiene products, and medicines for the most needy.”
Polish Humanitarian Action has launched a fund-raising drive for the victims of the Venezuelan humanitarian crisis. Details can be found at www.pah.org.pl
Almost 3.5 million people are said to have fled Venezuela amid warnings that the political conflict in that country may result in a migration crisis bigger than the one in Syria.
