Poland will work to rebuild citizens’ trust in European Union institutions, Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz told deputies on Thursday, outlining the priorities of his country’s foreign policy.

“Our overriding aim must be to restore the EU’s full and unquestionable legitimacy, to win back voters’ trust in European institutions, and to restore their ability to solve people’s real problems,” Czaputowicz said.
In a wide-ranging speech, he added: “The key role should be played by national parliaments, which reflect the will of the citizens of the countries that make up our community.”
Czaputowicz warned that "the European project" was under threat from populist movements both on the left and on the right.
“We consider these threats as a symptom of the crisis Europe is going through, not as its cause. The EU institutions should operate on the basis of powers set out in the treaties, and pursue objectives that advance [the interests of] all the members.”
