Poland, UK mark 100 years of resumed diplomatic relations

British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt wrote on Twitter on Tuesday: “100 years ago today Sir Esme Howard wrote to Marshal Józef Piłsudski, recognising Poland’s renewed independence. As we celebrate this anniversary, our partnership stands on the strongest possible foundations. May it go from strength to strength.”

Sir Esme Howard served as Civil Delegate on the International Commission to Poland. With his letter to Marshal Piłsudski, Chief of State of the newly re-established Republic of Poland, on February 26, 1919, diplomatic relations between Britain and Poland were renewed after a break of 124 years.

Poland regained independence on November 11, 1918, after 123 years of foreign rule.

A series of events are planned this year to commemorate the anniversary of resumed diplomatic relations, under the theme of “100 years of friendship.”
