Poland detains pair suspected of spying for China

Poland has detained two men suspected of spying for China, public broadcaster TVP Info reported on Friday.

The suspects are a former officer for the country’s Internal Security Agency (ABW) and a Chinese national who is a sales director for the Polish branch of Chinese telecommunications multinational Huawei, according to TVP Info.
They were detained by Poland’s Internal Security Agency, TVP Info reported.
It added that the pair have been charged with espionage and could face ten years in jail.
'Sensitive information'
The Polish suspect, named only as “Piotr D”, had access to sensitive information including to an internal government communication system for the secret transmission of information to top officials, according to TVP Info.
The Chinese suspect was named by TVP Info only as “Weijing W.”
Internal Security Agency officers have searched the headquarters of Huawei’s Polish branch and the offices of the Orange telecommunications corporation, where the Polish suspect worked after leaving the agency, TVP Info said.
In addition, agents have searched Poland’s Office of Electronic Communication (UKE) regulator, where the Polish suspect had also worked, according to TVP Info.
