Poland backs German bid to partner with Three Seas Initiative: aide

Poland has supported Germany’s bid to become a partner country of the Warsaw-led Three Seas Initiative, which aims to boost ties among 12 Central European, Baltic and Western Balkan nations, a Polish presidential aide said on Tuesday.

"If the remaining member countries also respond positively to the German request,” Berlin may send a representative to attend an upcoming summit of Three Seas Initiative leaders, Krzysztof Szczerski said, as quoted by the PAP news agency.
Officials representing the United States as well as the head of the European Commission are also expected to attend the summit, which is scheduled to take place in Bucharest, Romania, in September, Szczerski added.
The Polish-led Three Seas Initiative aims to boost infrastructure, energy and economic cooperation among 12 countries between the Black, Baltic and Adriatic Seas.
The initiative brings together Poland, Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Hungary.
US President Donald Trump attended a previous summit of leaders from the 12 countries in Warsaw in July last year. He declared at the time that America would be the “strongest ally and steadfast partner” of the “truly historic” Three Seas Initiative.
Polish President Andrzej Duda said last week that his country aimed to become "an energy hub for the region of Eastern and Central Europe, as part of the Three Seas Initiative.”
