The gathering in the Polish capital was expected to bring together leaders from nations referred to as the Bucharest Nine group: Poland, Romania, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.
Ahead of the summit, Poland’s President Andrzej Duda on Thursday discussed regional security policy as well as NATO’s July summit, due to be held in Brussels, with visiting Romanian President Klaus Iohannis.
"We hope that our meeting tomorrow, but above all NATO’s Brussels summit, will produce specific decisions and develop the perspective for building an environment for security and cooperation in our part of Europe," Duda said at a joint press conference with Iohannis in the Polish capital on Thursday.
According to Krzysztof Szczerski, a senior advisor to the Polish president, the Bucharest Nine leaders meeting in Warsaw were expected to adopt a joint declaration on the position of countries on NATO’s eastern flank about the goals of the Western military alliance in the coming years.
