Poland’s transformation from communism was also discussed during a 40-minute audience with Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and his family, the Polish premier said.

“We had a very warm, heartfelt talk with the Holy Father … about a lot of issues,” Morawiecki said.

Morawiecki said he and the head of the Catholic Church discussed helping people during times of a strong and weak economy, and about the dangers of a few individuals dominating the capital market.

The Polish prime minister added that he discussed the situation in Russia and Ukraine with the pope.

“Pope Francis was very interested in how Poland was discharging tensions and helping to stabilise Central and Eastern Europe,” Morawiecki said.

Morawiecki also met the Vatican's secretary of state, Pietro Parolin, and laid a wreath at the grave of the late Polish-born Pope John Paul II.
