Polish, US presidents to hold talks in New York: report

Polish President Andrzej Duda is on Tuesday to meet US President Donald Trump during a visit to New York to attend the 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Duda is scheduled to meet Trump and also sit down for talks with Vice President Mike Pence in the late evening Polish time, according to an aide.
Duda and Trump will hold talks during a dinner that the US president will give for international leaders attending the UN session.
Krzysztof Szczerski, Duda’s chief of staff, has said that Duda’s expected speech at the UN would touch on issues such as Poland’s upcoming membership of the UN Security Council.
In June this year, the United Nations General Assembly in a secret ballot chose Poland as a non-permanent member of the Security Council in 2018-2019. In his speech, Duda will outline Poland’s priorities as a member of the council, according to Szczerski.
While in New York, the Polish president will also meet with his Ukrainian counterpart Petro Poroshenko and Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite. The talks are expected to focus on ongoing Russian-Belarusian military drills called Zapad 2017.
During his US trip, the Polish president will also discuss climate issues, including a UN climate summit to be held in the southern Polish city of Katowice next year, officials have said. (gs/pk)
