Ukraine demands Russia stop torturing Crimean Tatars: report

The ministry’s spokeswoman Mariana Betsa voiced the demand in a tweet after a Crimean Tatar named Renat Paralamov was allegedly beaten by the Russian security service, according to the report by the BBC's Ukrainian news website.

"Abduction and torture continue in [Russian-]occupied Crimea. We demand that the occupier stop repressing and discriminating against Crimean Tatars," Betsa tweeted.

On September 13, Russian security service agents searched Paralamov's house in the town of Nizhnegorsk. According to a lawyer, Russian law enforcers took Paralamov away to an unknown location and his whereabouts were not known for a day.

On September 14, the Russian Security Service (FSB) said it had released Paralamov the day before. It also said that on Thursday he voluntarily came to the FSB offices in Simferopol to make a statement.

A few hours later, Paralamov called his relatives from someone else's phone and said he was at the Simferopol bus station and asked them to come pick him up.

According to the relatives, Paralamov was severely beaten and could not move around on his own.

Paralamov is receiving hospital treatment, according to the BBC report. (gs/pk)
