Polish Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski has said that a speech by US Vice President Mike Pence on Saturday at the Security Conference in Munich was clear as to America’s unchanged intentions towards Europe and NATO.

According to Waszczykowski, the previous US administration made decisions to increase Poland’s security, and the current administration is upholding them.

Pence said in his speech: "The United States of America strongly support NATO and will be unwavering in our commitment to this transatlantic alliance."

Waszczykowski said that there is no reason not to believe the US and that the speech should end speculation on a possible change in American policy towards the EU and NATO.

Earlier this week during a two-day defence ministers' council at NATO headquarters in Brussels, US Defence Secretary James Mattis warned NATO allies that they must honour their military spending pledges to ensure the US did not “moderate its commitment” to the alliance. (mol/pk)
