In a message to Italian PM Matteo Renzi, Szydło voiced “deep sympathy for those affected by the tragic earthquake which... devastated central Italy".

She added: “I believe that the determination of the authorities and devotion of residents will allow the damage to be quickly removed.”

The foreign ministry in Warsaw said no Poles were among the victims of the earthquake, in the early hours of Wednesday.

Polish Interior Minister Mariusz Błaszczak said Warsaw was ready to send firefighters and members of other services if Italy asked for help.
