Piotr Kupiec was working behind the till at a branch of sandwich chain Subway at the time of his arrest.
Locals expressed disbelief that the apparently friendly member of staff was wanted on charges of murder, manslaughter and theft.
The suspect had allegedly been part of a gang in Kraków, southern Poland. Among other matters, he is wanted in connection with a fatal stabbing that took place in 2007 in Kielce, south central Poland, following a football match between Legia Warszawa and Korona Kielce.
It appears that the suspect had been living in the Wiltshire town for at least four years, as indicated by his membership of a local gym.
Local media sources noted that the headquarters of the Wiltshire Constabulary are located just a few hundred metres away from the Subway branch, and that policemen regularly bought their lunch there. (nh/pk)
