Former Polish foreign minister Sikorski to work at Harvard

Former Polish foreign minister Radosław Sikorski is to join Harvard University's Center for European Studies as a non-resident Senior Fellow.

Sikorski, who had been one of the major figures in the outgoing centrist government, did not attempt to hold onto his seat in Bydgoszcz, north central Poland, in the 25 October general election. His Civic Platform party lost the election to the socially conservative Law and Justice party.
The Oxford-educated politician served as Poland's foreign minister from 2007 to 2014, before becoming Speaker of the Sejm (lower house of parliament) until June 2015.
He was one of several leading Civic Platform figures to lose their jobs in Poland's so-called 'Waitergate' affair, which involved a series of compromising recordings made illicitly in Warsaw restaurants.
According to a statement released by Harvard's Center for European Studies, Sikorski will be expected to “participate in CES activities, engage in seminars and discussions with faculty and students, and help to advance the academic mission of CES by stimulating new thinking and research on Europe.”
Sikorski has commented that he is looking forward to his new post.
“I am delighted to share my experience of Polish and European politics with American faculty and students.
“The pursuit of 'Veritas,' as in Harvard's motto, is always exciting,” he said. (nh/rk)
