Father Piotr Waśko had been stationed in the country for over a decade as a member of the Divine Word Missionaries (Verbists).
According to Father Jan Wróblewski, a spokesman for the Polish wing of the missionaries, Father Waśko “was probably attacked by local robbers who regularly attack mission stations.
“He had terrible abdominal wounds.”
The missionary was flown by helicopter from his parish in Timbunke to a hospital in the city of Madang, north east Papua New Guinea.
It is understood that he is no longer in a life-threatening condition, and after he has further stabilised, he will be flown back to Poland for further treatment. (nh)
