Police have declined to comment on the identity of the man, besides confirming his age (27).
The suspect was found standing outside the house where the crime apparently took place in the Stanfield district of Stoke-on-Trent, Sunday night.
“The focus of our investigation is on the address in Stanfield and with the 27-year-old man in custody at the moment,” Chief Superintendent Martin Evans of Staffordshire Police told local paper The Sentinel.
Marta Galikowska is understood to have moved to the UK from the city of Przemysl, south east Poland, in 2010.
Her daughter Maja (aged 5) attended a local school. Her second daughter, Olga, was one year old at the time of her death.
A 55-year-old woman who lives on the same street has said she believes the crime was a domestic incident.
“The police have taken a statement off my sons because one of them thought he heard a couple arguing,” she told The Sentinel.
“He heard screaming so ran to my other son and said, 'there's some falling out going on somewhere, will you come with me to have a look?' He regrets not going earlier because he thinks it might not have happened otherwise, but no-one can know that.” (nh)
