Polish citizens have been entitled to submit complaints to the court since 1993, and up until the close of 2011 Strasbourg issued 945 judgements concerning the Polish judicial system.
In 815 instances, Poland was found to have violated the European Convention on Human Rights.
As highlighted by the Dziennik Polski newspaper, in the last five years alone, Poland has been compelled to spend about 11 million zloty (2.69 million euro) on damages awarded by the Strasbourg court to Polish citizens.
Meanwhile, in 2011, the European Court of Human Rights received over 6300 complaints from Polish citizens concerning alleged violations by Poland's judicial system.
In this respect, Poles were again among the most frequent complainants to the Strasbourg court. (nh)
