An international tender will be announced this July for a company that can supply technical expertise for the construction of Poland's first nuclear power plant.
The tender, worth 40 billion zloty, is set to be declared by PGE, the largest electricity group in Poland, which has been allotted responsibility for the enterprise by the government.
Construction will be carried out at Zarnowiec, near Gdansk.
According to Dziennik Gazeta Prawna, a number of major international players are interested in the commission, including GE Hitachi, Westinghouse and a joint partnership of Areva and EdF.
U.S. bidder Westinghouse has already told Dziennik that if it wins the tender, it is keen to cooperate with Polish firms.
The paper claims that Polish companies have already expressed an interest in working with Westinghouse, citing Energomontaż Północ, Polimex-Mostostal, Budimex, Elektrobudowa and Erbud as examples.
This is not the first time that a nuclear power plant has been championed for Zarnowiec. A decree was passed in 1982 for such an enterprise, but the subsequent Chernobyl disaster and the fall of the Iron Curtain both contributed to the fact that the plant was never finished. (nh)
